Second Article of Faith

The first three Articles of Faith revolve around the trinity of God – the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. This first one is about God, the Son.

Jesus Christ is God’s Son

Jesus Christ is at the centre of our faith. He is our example in all matters. We recognise Him in His present-day activity. We want to experience His nearness.

Jesus Christ is the Son of God. He is true Man and true God. He is our Saviour and Redeemer. He brought His sacrifice for us.

Jesus Christ is the author and finisher of our faith. He is our friend and the bridegroom of our soul.

True man and true God

Jesus Christ said the following concerning His origin: “I came forth from the Father” (John 16: 28). God, the Son, has become human in Jesus Christ (cf. Philippians 2: 5–8). He was conceived by the Holy Spirit (cf. Luke 1: 35; Hebrews 1: 5), as it says in our creed, and “born of the virgin Mary”. Jesus Christ is true Man and true God.

Jesus Christ brought the sacrifice on the cross for the redemption of mankind who had fallen into sin and therefore God, the Father said of Him: “This is my beloved son, in whom I am well pleased” (Mathew 3: 17). Jesus always did the will of His Father. For this reason, His Father could say of Him: “… in whom I am well pleased.”

Jesus Christ, our Saviour

Jesus Christ brought the sacrifice on the cross for the redemption of mankind who had fallen into sin because He loves mankind very much (cf. John 15: 13).

Jesus was humble and therefore washed His disciples’ feet (cf. John 13: 4-15).

He treated all sinners with compassion, for example, the sinful woman whom the people wanted to stone (cf. John 8: 3-11).

Jesus said, “Come to Me, all you who labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest” (Mathew 11: 28).

Jesus Christ Today

The love of Jesus Christ can also be felt today. We experience His patience and compassion in forgiveness, His nearness in prayer, His presence in Holy Communion, His help in our battle to overcome, and His care in need.

Jesus Christ sent His Apostles in the early Christian period and still sends them today. His sacrifice is still valid today—for you too!

Through the Holy Sealing we belong to Jesus Christ’s bridal congregation. He is the bridegroom of our soul.

Second Article of Faith

I believe in Jesus Christ, the only begotten Son of God, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried, entered the realm of the dead, rose again from the dead on the third day, and ascended into heaven. He is seated at the right hand of God, the Father Almighty, from where He will return.
